Todd Marsh Biography

Raised among the glacial hills of southeastern Lake Ontario, I spent my childhood exploring the shorelines and creeks that feed the Great Lakes. This early fascination with the earth’s structure led to a career in geology and a lifelong habit of using photography as a tool for study. In my early days, I analyzed 4×6 prints with the same intensity I now apply to complex luminosity masks in Photoshop.

Now based in Central New York, I use the Adirondack wilderness and the Finger Lakes region as my primary field sites. My background in geology allows me to see the landscape as a living record of deep time—where the placement of a glacial erratic or the curve of a shale gorge tells a story of ancient forces. I bring this same analytical rigor to the digital darkroom.

Through my ‘Behind the Image’ series, I serve as a guide for photographers looking to move beyond the snapshot. By deconstructing the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ of my process, I transform the technical complexity of modern editing into a transparent, repeatable craft. Whether I’m wrestling with the dynamic range of a misty sunrise or sculpting light in a deep forest, my goal is to reveal the intent behind every pixel.
