Caden Sitting Next to Large Red Oak – November 18, 2024 365 Project

Day 14 of the 365 Project: Caden Sitting in the Sun Next to Large Red Oak

Springer Spaniel Caden Sitting next to large Red Oak

Why Did I Take This Image of Caden and the Red Oak?

I like to use Caden for scale in many of my tree photos to show the size of the tree trunk. Caden is a good model most of the time and sits there while I adjust the camera and take a few photos.

He is enjoying the mid-November sun here at Whiskey Hollow Road.

This wooded area has many large oak, maple, and beech trees in a unique topographic area. The Hollow is glacially formed and the lower part has a cemented glacial conglomerate sitting on a shale bedrock. I am not sure what shale formation it is, but it is Devonian in age.

The trees grow on these long narrow sandy ridges above the conglomerate and rise 75 to 100 feet above the stream that runs down the middle of the Hollow.

A natural spring runs out of the conglomerate and many locals get their drinking water from the spring.

I’m sure the spring water was used to make whiskey hence the name Whiskey Hollow.

There are a lot of stories and history in this Hollow including rumors of ghosts. Maybe someday I will look up more of the stories about this place.

But the reason I took this image was to document this large Red Oak tree and of course Caden. I would be remiss not to mention how beautiful of a November day this is. The highs are in the 50s and as you can see in the photo the sun is shining brightly even if the rays are low in the November sky, it has some warmth to it.

Day 14, and 2 weeks in the books for the 365 Project.
