Day 2 of the 365-Project: Tiny Surprise
Why Did I Take This Image of the Moss & Tree Seedling?
Similar to yesterday with the mushrooms, I have a thing for mosses. I love the shades of green, the many leaf shapes, and the way the branches and leaves add texture to photos.
I must admit, I adore them, they brighten up dark places and add interest to boring subjects.
Making them even more interesting is when other living things are growing up and out of them. Whether it be mushrooms, seedlings, trees, or flowering plants. I almost always bring up the camera and take a shot.
The scene above was no different. I like the seedling (I think it is a white pine seedling, but I could be wrong) growing up and out of the moss. The seedling uses the sphagnum and soil the moss creates from the log and the constant supply of moisture to grow.
Will it survive? We will have to wait and see.
However, I was to be surprised again.
What I Didn’t See I Liked Even More
One of the reasons I love photography, especially macro and close-up photography are the surprises you find when you review the photos.
Maybe some people take the time and take in the scene, but my MO is to see something I like and get right to finding a pleasing composition and taking the photo.
I’m looking at it as the overall scene and not the details. That is until I zoom in on the back of the screen after taking the photos to check for sharpness and focus. More times than not, I see a surprise.
That is what happened here.
The Tiny Aphid
When I zoomed in there it was hanging upside down on the bottom of the seedling’s needles. I tiny green aphid hanging out.
I recomposed the science to make sure the little guy was against a darker background and snapped the photo!
