Day 11 of the 365 Project: An Old Slide Gate
Why Did I Take an Image of This Old Slide Gate?
Well, because it is old!
I guess one aspect of this 365 Project is you will find out what I like. I mean, if I take a photo it’s because I like the scene or subject.
In this case, it is the subject. I think you will need a little context to understand this mechanism. I took this photo during my Postal Route in Memphis, New York. One of the mailboxes is on a street behind the Memphis Hardwood Store with several old buildings on the property.
One is this long building with a metal roof and raised floor on concrete and stone pilings. As you can see in the photo the beams are old and starting not to support parts of the building. I’m not sure how old, but it is near the Erie Canal and I would not be surprised if this building was of that era. I’ll find out one of these days when I have more time.
Anyway, I see a series of these old slide gates. I’ve seen plenty of these before in old grain buildings. But this building isn’t set up like that. The roof is too short and boards making up the siding are and never were strong enough to support a lot of weight against them.
Yet, we have these slide gates. There were probably 10 or 12 of these along the side of the building. Most are not in great shape or destroyed. I also noticed that the gate are meant to be work, opened and closed, from the outside.
I wanted to capture an image of this gate before all is lost.
Old buildings and their uses fascinate me, so that is why I took the image.
When I have more information I will edit this post.
Day 11 is in the books!
