Frozen Crab Apples – November 23, 2024 365 Project

Day 19 of the 364 Project: Frozen Crabapples

Why Did I Take This Image of These Frozen Crabapples?

If you have been following along with the 365 Project you will remember that some days I have to do some extra runs. I deliver mail on an auxiliary route and if someone calls out or has a day off I need to cover their route. Today was one of those days plus some extra work to help another colleague.

One of the people on my route has this old crabapple. Not one of the ornamental crabapples, but a full-sized tree that has large crabapples that you can eat (if you dare), or many people used to make jelly from them.

The tree is loaded with fruit and I decided to take an image of a cluster of crabapples that still have some ice on them as the rain from yesterday froze last night.

I shot the photo handheld at an aperture of f/4.0, ISO of 1600, and a shutter speed of 1/250 seconds as there was a slight breeze and used the tree truck as a background. I’m not too happy with the light in the bottom left-hand corner but I need to shoot the photo with the majority of the apples in the same focal plane because of the low aperture.

I like the wrinkled nature of the apples’ skin and the crust of ice covering many apples.

The lack of daylight makes it difficult to get a photo from outside on some days, but I’m happy with this image.

Day 19 is in the books! Tomorrow is Sunday and a day off for me, so hopefully I can find a good subject.
